I checked all the fuses with a multi meter, and they were all good. Next I found the pin out guide for the port itself on here, and checked the port itself.

The software fix is an i level upgrade which is supposed to fix 95% of cars, unfortunately not in my case so a new headunit has been fitted under warranty, while this issue still exists its a good idea to keep the car under warranty as a new unit is £1,500 + vat + fitting & coding. So the total cost is well over £2K.
Guys, just looked at an E60 and the iDrive has crashed! its stuck on the TPMS warning screen and i cant get access to the radio screen, service screen, bluetooth screen etc etc etc pressing the menu button does nothing and i have it on good authorithy (Thanks John Doe) that the iDrive has probably shat itself which can be very very costly to fix.
